Sunrise 7:18: Wearing of the green


The area around the Big Dish was doing its "green" best to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The female Dawn Jogger noticed that the oaks are sprouting new leaves. (The Dish area also has a fair number of deciduous oaks.) To the surprise of many (she thinks) St. Patrick was not Irish but an English or Scottish missionary to Ireland. It's been a religious festival in Ireland for hundreds of years; in fact, the pubs were required to close on March 17 until the 1970s. The parades associated with the day are a U.S. invention. The female DJ was dismayed to read earlier in the week a movement to secularize St. Patrick's Day by renaming it Shamrock Day...
